Thyroid Surgery in Bakersfield

Thyroid surgery is a procedure used to address tumors in the thyroid or thyroid surgery. Double board-certified Satish R. Vadapalli, MD, offers thyroid surgery to the residents of Porterville, Bakersfield, CA and nearby communities.

What is Thyroid Surgery?

Thyroid surgery is a surgical procedure performed to remove the thyroid as a method of treating thyroid cancer. The thyroid is located in the lower front part of the neck. The thyroid creates and delivers thyroid hormones to the body, which are responsible for facilitating many natural body functions. The thyroid helps maintain functions like metabolism and body temperature.

Thyroid cancer can impact these functions and cause additional symptoms like throat pain, hoarseness, or coughing. Fortunately, thyroid surgery is an effective procedure with a high success rate for treating thyroid cancer.

Why Choose Satish R. Vadapalli, MD for Your Thyroid Surgery?

Dr. Vadapalli specializes in head and neck surgery as well as many sinus and snoring treatments. With over two decades of experience, he is an ideal candidate for performing thyroid surgery and related procedures. No matter what treatment you are receiving, you can always expect the attentive and personalized care for which we are known.

What is the Thyroid Surgery Treatment Like?

Thyroid surgery is performed with general anesthesia. Once anesthesia is administered, an incision will be made in the neck. This incision will be placed in a natural crease in the neck to minimize the visibility of any scarring. Once the incision is made, surgical tools will be used to remove part or all of the thyroid depending on your diagnosis. Then, the incision will be closed and a drain tube will be placed in the treatment area to allow fluids to drain and encourage healing in the area. This surgery typically takes about an hour to perform.

What is the Thyroid Surgery Recovery Like?

After thyroid surgery, it is common to experience soreness, swelling, and bruising in the neck area. You may also have a sore throat or hoarseness in the voice for several days. Patients are generally able to return to work and other normal activities within a week or two of treatment. It is also important that patients care for their treatment site properly, which we will provide you instructions for.

What Results Can I Expect from Thyroid Surgery?

Thyroid surgery will eliminate cancerous growths and cells in the thyroid to prevent cancer from spreading to other areas of the body. However, the thyroid provides many essential hormones to the body, which your body will no longer be able to produce on its own. For this reason, we will prescribe you with thyroid hormone replacement medications or treatments. During the months following your treatment, we will monitor the efficacy of the thyroid hormone replacement medication to ensure that it is performing as well as possible.
