What is Ear Surgery?
Ear surgery, also referred to as otoplasty, is a surgery designed to enhance the cosmetic appearance of the ears. Although many patients pursue this procedure voluntarily, there are many cases where ear surgery can be a functionally beneficial procedure.
Ear surgery is often recommended for patients who develop birth defects, ear injuries, or related conditions. When the ears become damaged or do not develop properly, it can impact a patient’s sense of hearing as well as their self-esteem. Bakersfield Sinus Center offers ear surgery to help patients overcome these difficulties and enjoy an improved quality of life.
Why Choose Satish R. Vadapalli, MD for Your Ear Surgery?
Dr. Vadapalli specializes in procedures involving the ears and the surrounding areas of the face. With over two decades of experience, he is an ideal candidate for performing ear surgery and related procedures. No matter what treatment you are receiving, you can always expect the attentive and personalized care for which we are known.
What is the Ear Surgery Treatment Like?
Ear surgery is usually performed with general anesthesia to ensure a patient’s comfort and safety throughout the procedure. Once anesthesia is administered, we will make incisions in the back of the ear. Any incisions we make are designed to be well-concealed by the natural shape of the ears.
Once incisions are made, Dr. Vadapalli will manipulate the cartilage to enhance the shape and function of the ears. The ears are a complex feature, so this procedure often takes a few hours to perform. Once the desired results are achieved, the incisions will be closed and the procedure will be complete.
What is the Ear Surgery Recovery Like?
After ear surgery, we typically apply a bandage around the head to keep the ears protected. This will help minimize swelling and any accidental contact to the ears that can alter the results. We remind patients to sleep on their backs for several days to prevent any damage or irritation to the ears.
Most activities can be resumed within a few days of treatment, but we may recommend the continued use of a headband to protect the ears while sleeping or participating in other activities. Some residual swelling may persist for a few months, but the majority of a patient’s side effects will subside within a week or two.
What Results Can I Expect from Ear Surgery?
The results from ear surgery are often permanent, unless an unforeseen event impacts the results of treatment. Within a few weeks of treatment, patients will notice an improved appearance in the ears and sometimes even an improved sense of hearing.
