What is Parotid Surgery?
Parotid surgery is a surgical procedure performed to remove tumors from the parotid glands. The parotid glands are salivary glands located on either side of the mouth, in front of the ears. They are located near the facial nerve, which controls many of the expressive features of your face. Because of this proximity, the growth of tumors in the parotid glands can affect the function of the facial nerve. Any tumors in the parotid glands are often addressed quickly to minimize any adverse affects they may have on the facial nerve.

What is the Parotid Surgery Treatment Like?
Parotid surgery is performed using general anesthesia. Once anesthesia is administered, an incision will be made underneath the ear and along the jawline towards the neck. Through this incision, Dr. Vadapalli will remove the tumor and a small layer of the surrounding tissue. Afterwards, the incision will be closed and the treatment will be complete. The parotid surgery procedure is typically completed in about an hour.
What is the Parotid Surgery Recovery Like?
The recovery from parotid surgery takes about two weeks. During this time, you will need to take special care of the incision as well as the drain applied to help the healing process. Most swelling and discomfort should resolve within two weeks of surgery, at which time patients can return to work and other activities. Approximately one month after treatment, patients can resume exercise and other strenuous activities and will notice a significant reduction in swelling and scarring.
